A version mismatch means the Minecraft version your client is running doesn’t match the version your server is running. They must be identical to connect.
Identify the error
When a player tries to join, they’ll see one of these messages:
- “Outdated client! Please use 1.X.X”: the client is older than the server.
- “Outdated server! I’m still on 1.X.X”: the server is older than the client.
The error message tells you the version the server is running. Use this to fix the mismatch.
There are two ways to fix this:
- Change the client version to match the server
- Change the server version to match the client
Change the client version to match the server
This is the easiest fix when you don’t want to change the server version.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher.
- Click Installations.
- Click New Installation (or edit an existing one).
- In the Version dropdown, select the version matching your server.
- Save and launch.
Change the server version to match the client
Use this only if all players are on a specific version and you want the server to match.
Note: Create a backup before you do this. See Back up your Minecraft server.
See Change your Minecraft server version for steps.
Mods and modpacks
If you’re running a modpack, players must use the exact same modpack version as the server. Different modpack versions will cause mismatches even if the base Minecraft version matches.
Direct players to install the modpack through CurseForge or Modrinth using the same version number as your server.
