Change your Minecraft server edition or version

Change your Minecraft server edition or version

Applies to: Minecraft Java Edition · All plans

Before you start

  • Back up your world before changing versions. Some version changes can corrupt chunk data or cause item/block loss. See Back up your Minecraft server.
  • Downgrading (e.g. 1.21 > 1.20) is not officially supported by Mojang and can corrupt your world. Proceed with caution.
  • If you’re running mods or plugins, check that they have a version compatible with your target version before switching.
  • All players must use the same version as the server. A mismatch will prevent them from joining.

Steps

  1. Sign in to your Syrup dashboard.
  2. On the My Servers page, click Manage on your server.
  3. Stop your server. See Start, stop, or restart your server.
  4. Create a backup. See Back up your Minecraft server.
  5. Go to Advanced > Server Actions.
  6. From the Edition dropdown, choose the edition that you want.
  7. From the Minecraft version dropdown, choose the Minecraft version that you want. If you want to use the latest available version, skip this step. If you chose the Vanilla edition in the previous step, skip this step.
  8. From the Version dropdown, choose the version of your chosen edition that you want.
  9. Click Install Different Edition. The installation starts. You’ll get a notification when it’s complete.
  10. Click the bell icon and check your notifications for the successful installation.
  11. Start your server and watch the console for errors. See Start, stop, or restart your server.

Check if it worked

When the server starts, the console will print the version number near the top. Look for a line like Starting minecraft server version 1.21.1.

In the console, you can run /version to check which version is active.
